Draft Day Dodger

With the St Louis Rams and the Atlanta Falcons scrambling to be the first to hire offensive tackle Jake Long, the Chiefs will probably have to turn to free-agency in order to fill their holey (and I dont mean religious) offensive line.  Ryan Clady of Boise State and Chris Williams of Vanderbilt are both good, solid tackle prospects that should go in the first round.  But neither of these players are top five material.  So where does that leave the Chiefs?

The most likely scenerios would be the acqusition of DT Sedrick Ellis or DT Glen Dorsey.  Looking at the stats from their respective collegiate careers, one would think Dorsey would be the obvious choice, with him being the most decorated LSU lineman of all time.  But there is an unseen issuse with Dorsey that might make the Chiefs pass him over for the Trojans star defensive tackle Sedrick Ellis.  His chronic knee injuries have plauged him over these past two years and will continue to plauge him throughout his career.

Like most serious fans I watched the first couple rounds of the scouting combine to see the talent my Chiefies would be looking at for the 2008 season.  When I saw a player I had heard of (difficult when watching OL) or a player who performed particularly well, I would mentally mark that candidate and determine whether or not I thought the Chiefs would benefit from selecting him.  One of the big name players I was excited about watching was the heavily decorated Dorsey.  But where was he?  There are only 4 or so reasons a player would choose to miss the scouting combine, and the most glaring reason is personal injury.  Most college players realize that the combine is their last chance to impress the scouts and will fight through just about anything to have their chance at the "show".  But unavoidably, Dorsey was with LSU trainers and not NFL scouts on the day of the OL combine.

All I'm saying is that it must have taken a heck of an injury to sideline a 6'2, 300 pound man, and we (the Chiefs) need another project player as much as we need a game against the New England Patriots in 2008.  But hey, what do I know?  I guess a 4-12 team can use whatever help they can get, huh?
